Ayurveda
– the veda of life – is believed to have originated
during the vedic period. This is considered as a demi veda of ‘Adharva
Veda’, one among the Vedas. It is believed that the text of
‘Ayurveda’ was initiated by Brahma to Indra. The modern
generation who are influenced by scientific concepts will find it
difficult to analyse and accept the principles of Ayurveda. We normally
have a misconception about truth. For us those which match with
our presumptions are true and those which do not match with are
false. In these circumstances it is quiet natural that the modern
man find it difficult to enquire and accept the real sense of Ayurveda.
Ayurveda
is not mearly a treatment methodology. On the one side it advices
about the do’s and do not’s in the life style so that
one could keep the health of mind and body intact. Conclusions are
made taking into consideration all factors in the universe influencing
the human beings. This indeed is the importance of Ayurveda with
modern life. The science of Ayurveda can be understood in two different
ways –
1.
Chikitsa Shastram, the science of treatment and
2.
Swastha Vrutham, the art of attaining liesurel life
‘The
Chikitsa Shastra’ explains the various diseases and the treatment
there of in detail. Treatment methodology of Ayurveda is further
divided into two parts namely “Shodhana Chikitsa” (purification
treatment) and “Shamana Chikitsa” (purification treatment).
In
the present day situation where atmospheric pollution is very high,
the “Shodhana Chikitsa” (Panchakarma Chikitsa) is of
much importance. Nasyam, Vamanam, Virechanam, Vasthi and Rakthamoksha
are the five purifications coming under Shodhana Chikitsa. Various
diseases like Bronchitis, different type of skin diseases, etc.,
are caused by water and air pollution. Shodhana Chikitsa not only
cures the diseases but also eradicate the root cause of diseases.
This demands controlled diet restrictions (pathyam). Its results
are great.
Science
has grown immensely. Now technics prevails in the medical field
as well. This is why a few, even among the scientists doubts acceptability
of a system which is thousands of years old. I could say firmly
that the ideas of Ayurveda, its medicinal constitutions and its
applications are much different from that of modern medicine. It
is incorrect to believe that the modern science can irradicate all
types of diseases. A lot of knowledges are still to be added to
it. There are some scientists who have logic in thinking and courage
in doing, now accepting this point of view.
According
to Ayurveda, the human body is made of three humours and Panchakarma
is the way for purifying the body. Whatever be the reason for the
uneasiness of the human body, it is due to the imbalance of these
three humours. Ayurveda treatment is meant to keep the balance of
humours. Panchakarma is aimed to mitigate the fumed ‘doshas’
to normality. It is sure that “Panchakarma Chikitsa” will
have a leading role to that extent till the basic nature of human
being remain in this manner.
On the other hand, “Shamana Chikitsa” is the method of
subsiding the disease by using medicine. Even though Ayurveda medicines
do not give quick results, it is important to know that they do not
produce any side effect. This indeed is the main attraction of Ayurveda.
Apart
from this, there are some other traditional treatment methods prevailing
in Kerala. These methods are found effective to a great extent for
easing the back pain, different sorts of headeaches, diseases and
muscular cramps of the neck, which are present day scenario. “Swastha
Vrutham” explains how a healthy man could perpectuate him good
health. It is good to prevent the disease rather than curing it. Here
is the importance of Ayurveda, because Ayurveda is not the science
which discuss the health of the human body. It is that science where
the whole human being is the subject of the discussion. This in detail
discuss the basic problems of the human mind as well as the human
body and prescribes the do’s and don’ts for the comfort
of the being. Ayurveda always thinks of a correct style of life. Such
thoughts emerge from experiences and not from mere imaginations. The
basis of health is cleanliness of both mind as well as body. Daily
occupation, seasonal occupations and seasonal routines are all important
for maintaining good health.
It
is a fact that these prescriptions are tough to follow as strictly
as it said but to a great extend it is possible and one should do
it. The modern medicine have proved that the chemicals which are found
in the various forms of food items effect human health. But very few
know that such chemicals effect the working of human mind and their
behavior. Ayurveda discusses this puzzle in detail. The diet is classified
into three as “Sathwika, Rajasa and Thamasa” (substancial,
illustrious and procrastinative). Together with nourishing and digestive
food items, medicines and green vegetables are adviced. In Ayurveda,
serious mention is made about daily diet and also about diet for different
diseases.
Indeed
Ayurveda is not merely a treatment methodology, considered as science
which uplift the physical and mental make up of man kind
