Winter prediction 2008

Geneesh

Here’s some fashion advice for the next winter:
Australian Fashion Week being held in Melbourne hinted the kind of fashion likely to be popular the next winter season.
Muted tones, straight-leg cargo pants matched with a printed tee or brown woolen cardigans were abundantly seen. As predicted, high-waisted dresses will be rage the next season.
Patterns, printed or woven, can be seen coming in a big way.
Flowing, high-waisted volume dresses featuring muted, psychedelic or floral prints caught fancy on the ramp.
The color palette has a lot of yellow, royal blue and khaki.
For girls, it might be a comeback of cheeky 1970s-inspired roller-disco uniform, while men might be seen wearing corduroy pants, round-necked T-shirts with white trim

With the cold weather upon us, shopping for fashionable clothing while being practical is a must. While some fashions from previous season are still acceptable, update that closet with a few pieces that are being shown on runways around the world.

Cinched waists, belts and skirts are a great transition from summer into the colder months. Narrow belts give off a feminine appearance, while the wide and structured belts define waists. The glamour of old Hollywood is being seen in some fashion shows, with the ladylike shapes of pencil skirts and classic colors. Cropped jackets are paired with skirts, and some designers are changing proportions. Fitted jackets are being matched with full skirts, and tailored suits are showing up again on the fashion runway.

With skirts and dresses, the hemlines are getting longer, resting below the knee or right at the knee. Cropped trousers are a fashionable alternative to skirts, but avoid wearing flat shoes. Mid and high heels work best with the length of the cropped pant, dressing it up to make it more acceptable for office or casual wear.

Evening wear has also extended its hemline, falling to a floor length. Colors that are being shown on the runway are vibrant and impressive, so be careful not to over accessorize. When wearing these classic gowns, try keeping the décolletage free of jewelry and keep makeup simple as well. Red lipstick and wavy hair can be a perfect tie in with the old Hollywood glamour.

As with past years, the classic military style is making another appearance. Khaki colors are crisp and clean, especially when embellished with buttons or other hardware. The trench coat is a classic look, when used with casual clothing. Look for red and gold accents, since it can dress up the military look and also make it more glamorous.

Chunky sweaters are being chosen as an alternative to a coat. Look for larger sizes, since it's all about warmth and comfort. The key color coming from the runways is purple. Variations like lavender or deep violet seem to be in abundance, so look out for styles in this shade.

When accessorizing with handbags, look for a classic bag with a new twist. Some designers are matching bags to the outfit, in the same color scheme. Croc bags are a popular choice for the fall, as well as larger versions of the smaller bags. Clutch bags are being paired with daytime wear, and custom bags complete with jewels or hardware are been seen again.

The Shift Dress
The shift dress is most commonly linked with the 60s, but actually started popping up in the 40s paired with the cropped jackets we are seeing this season. They are a great buy for the winter season for those who want a wearable, versatile dress with a mod feel. Working well with boots and stockings, the typically shorter length is great for petite figures and those who love their legs.

Flowy Lines
Longer lines are practical for winter and are great for girls who aren’t keen on showing the legs. You will find plenty of gorgeous dresses that reach below the knee and beyond in a multitude of fabrics and colors. Remember to play with proportions in order to get a balanced look, more flow below means that fitted tops are essential. A little cropped cardi or jacket to draw the eye up can be favorable.

The Pinafore
This is a great option for the girls who like the idea of the shift dress but need a little more tailoring. The pinafore usually cinches under the bust or at the waist. This season’s pinafores vary from school girl influenced styles to party looks and lush designs in silks and satins. They look great with the 40s influenced heels of the moment or the 80s slouch boots that are abundant this season.

Bows and Ties
A huge trend from the Fashion Week catwalks was the emphasis on bows and ties. The look is quite feminine but also a great way to balance dresses or bring attention to your best feature. A tie around the hips can lengthen the torso, while one around the waist cinches and creates shape. Below the bust creates shape and can help balance pear shapes whilst bows along the neckline are a great way to add texture to the décolletage.

Tulips and Volume
It’s being called “the new shape” but this new shape is a little mix of old and new. While the volume from seasons before was all about largeness, this new shape is all about texture and an almost construction like line. Imagine folding a piece of paper and you will be getting close to what designers are doing. This is a great move for those of us who found all the volume of previous seasons a bit much, but still wanted to create some form.

Sweater Dress
Made of knit, wool or merino these sweater dresses have the shape of your favourite cardis, woollen jumpers and sweaters. Wear with leggings, belted at the waist and a great pair of boots for a decidedly casual and quirky look. So warm, comfy and cozy!

Tunic Dress
I love to call this the lazy dress because the oversized shape means you simply throw it on and off you go. They tend to be a little on the short side for me so I’ve been layering mine with skinny denim and woollen tights, however, they look fantastic as 60s inspired cocktail dresses paired back with slinky heels. Heavy up the lighter fabrics with natural touches like leather belts whilst wool blend items can benefit from a little bit of shine from patents and metallics.

Skivvy
High necks are great for winter, and the skivvy dress is supremely simple and sexy. They look great on their own, paired with a belt, boots or heels. And of course they can be layered under your summer dresses to make them winter friendly. These dresses are popping up all over the place but remember to get the most wearable, comfortable skivvy dress, natural fibres are key.
